Desperate migrants flock to ‘new Calais’ in fresh mission to reach UK
Lorry drivers have been placed on red alert after warnings that the trafficking situation at French ports was not under control.
The Road Haulage Association (RHA) said its members’ safety could come under threat if the situation at smaller ports – where they say security is more lax – gets any worse.
Migrant activity is growing and an increase in security at Calais is pushing migrants further afield, it appears that Dieppe – about half-way between Calais and Le Havre – is becoming the new migrant magnet.
Around £89billion worth of UK trade travels through Calais each year. But the danger facing those bringing goods into Britain is so grave some haulage companies avoid the port at all costs. The situation is in danger of spiralling out of control, more needs to be done to protect our drivers.
